1. Always use a bigger container than you think you need.
  2. Thinning seedlings always feels a bit cruel, but it must be done.
  3. Plants in containers need to be consistently watered, and often!
  4. That being said, plants can drown.
  5. A healthy garden is its own little ecosystem.
  6. Plant flowers!
  7. Don’t kill all your bugs. You’re really going to need some of them.
  8. Never underestimate the tenacity and perseverance of an armadillo.
  9. Soil is a living thing!
  10. Start small.

  1. I agree about thinning seedlings. How I hate to pull up the little healthy plants. How I regret not doing so when I harvest the unhappily crowded, sometimes stunted, mature plants.

  2. Hi there. I’m loving your blog from the very first post. I live in a climate where farmers big and small look to the sky with much hope, and often times are let down by Mother Nature (I live in Australia, where droughts are very much a way of life). I was just thinking yesterday about the winter just gone – that we probably had a handful of rainy days in a period of months. The weather at the moment is way too hot for Spring – putting more farmers at risk. I grew up in a medium sized town in rural Queensland (the town is called Toowoomba) – a town with rich volcanic soil – so anything grows there – it’s known as the garden capital of Australia. Every year for as long as I can remember, the Carnival of Flowers has been a spring event – here’s the link to the website. Shame you can’t come over and check the gardens out. 🙂
